Diving the fork in the bowl

Welcome to the world of Vapiano, where we believe that every meal should be tailored exactly the way you want it. In our quest to provide a more interactive and user-friendly menu, we set out to revolutionise the way people navigate through our offerings. Gone are the days of frustration and confusion when ordering food. Join me on a journey as I share how I tackled the challenge of streamlining the ordering process and making it a delightful experience for all.

Ordering food should be a breeze, even for the busiest of individuals. In this chapter, we explore the importance of quick and efficient navigation. Through meticulous data analysis and user testing, I developed a user flow that simplifies the ordering process, allowing foodies to customize their meals effortlessly. From intuitive filters to smart search functionalities, each step is designed to ensure a seamless experience from start to finish.

Taking a bite with research

To address this challenge, I embarked on a comprehensive UX research method aimed at identifying the key elements of a streamlined and frustration-free food ordering experience. Through surveys and questionnaires, I sought to uncover the most crucial factors when it comes to ordering food. The insights gathered allowed me to gain a deep understanding of users' needs, expectations, and preferences, paving the way for an improved menu design and ordering process.

The research process began by posing critical questions to participants, such as:

  • What aspects are most important to you when ordering food?

  • When browsing a menu, what specific information do you expect to see?

  • What are some additional needs, options, or issues that can arise during the food ordering process?

  • How do you prefer to order your food? What methods or platforms do you
    find most convenient?

By eliciting responses to these inquiries, I was able to gain valuable insights into users' pain points, frustrations, and desired features. Analysing the survey results provided a solid foundation for crafting an enhanced and user-centric food ordering experience, reducing friction and increasing satisfaction among customers.

Through this UX research method, I successfully uncovered user expectations, identified common challenges, and gained insights into preferred ordering methods. Armed with this valuable information, I was able to design and implement solutions that addressed these pain points and revolutionised the way users interact with the food ordering process.

Making the process easier at Vapiano

After conducting A/B testing on the app design, we presented users with two distinct choices for navigating and personalising their meals. The purpose of this testing was to determine which option resonated better with users when it came to placing their desired orders.

Through careful analysis of the test results, it became evident that one of the options stood out as the preferred choice among users. Their feedback and interactions provided valuable insights into their preferences, allowing us to make data-driven decisions and refine the design accordingly.

By leveraging the power of A/B testing, we were able to confidently select the design option that users perceived as superior. This approach ensured that the app's navigation and personalisation features aligned seamlessly with users' expectations, resulting in an optimised user experience that catered to their needs and preferences.

During user research and A/B testing, we discovered that many users prefer scrolling through a menu because it allows them to have a comprehensive view of all available options.

Browsing through the app when presented with a menu that requires them to click through different categories or pages to view various pasta options, they may find it tedious and time-consuming. They might worry about missing out on potential choices hidden behind multiple clicks.

On the other hand, if the menu allows users to scroll through a single page or section, they can quickly scan and visually process all the available pizza options at once. This seamless scrolling experience enables them to compare choices, view prices, and consider additional customization options effortlessly.

Moreover, scrolling provides a sense of control and exploration. Users can scroll back and forth, easily revisiting options that caught their attention initially or exploring new choices that pique their curiosity. This flexibility and uninterrupted flow make the browsing experience more engaging and intuitive for users.

Conclusion

In the vast realm of Vapiano, there is still so much to discover and refine. As I continue my journey with this project, I aim to explore various aspects, including optimising the ordering experience for takeaway orders and enhancing the in-restaurant ordering process.

Additionally, I intend to delve into innovative ways to showcase different restaurant locations and uncover strategies to increase order conversion rates even further. These intriguing questions serve as the driving force behind my ongoing work on this transformative project.
